The reading passage and the lecture are both about the possible author of a handwritten manuscript, which was written in total different script. The book was found acquired by Wilfrid Voynich, a book seller. The author feels that there are three probable writers of the Voyenich manuscript. The lecturer challenges each of the possibilities made by the author. He is of the opinion that none of the persons mentioned in the passage is original writer of the manuscript.
To begin with, the author says that the manuscript could be written by Anthony Ascham, a botanist, and physician. It is mentioned in the passage that the manuscript is about some scientific research. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that Ascham was an ordinary physicist and cannot write a complex book like Voynich manuscript. Moreover, the plant illustrations were common and could be found in any general book.
Secondly, the author suggests that Edward Kelley, a magician cum tricker might be the writer of the manuscript. The author, in the passage, mentions that Kelley used a random fake script and sold that book to some wealthy people in the guise of a magical book. The lecturer, however, rejects this point by saying that it was easy to fool people at that time by using a simple book, why would someone write a complex book like Voynich manuscript for that purpose?
Finally, the author contents that Vonich himself had written this book to sell in as a mysterious book in high price. Also, he had knowledge about old books too. The lecturer casts doubt on this point by saying that the ink on the manuscript was found to be 400 years old, way earlier than Voynich. He claims that even if Voynich managed to get vellum but how could he manage to get 400 years old ink?
