TPO 38- Integrated writing
The world's forests are facing increasing pressure which, if unchecked, will threaten the health of many industries, economies, nations, and lives. The development of an international fund to help developing countries implement useful conservation techniques in forest protection is the best way to protect the world's forests and hopefully reverse negative trends that imperil our forests.
The lecture and the passage discuss whether using the international fund is the best solution to protect forests against the logging industry, oil companies, and property developers or not. The reading passage states that it is the best way of protecting forests. Whereas, the professor in the lecture declares that it could not be an efficient manner.
First, the reading mentions that this fund is a guarantee keeping agricultural area uninterrupted by environmentally damaging industries. However, the lecturer argues against it and believes that agriculture is a destructive force upon the ecosystem. By the increase of the population, farmers try to apply modern techniques, like using fertilizers, to harvest farms more than before. Not only do these techniques increase the runoff and water pollution but also the rate of deforestation due to these techniques is much worse than the logging industry.
Second, the writer claims that the international fund could have a positive effect on the economy of these regions. Although, the lecturer disagrees with this argument by saying that this money doesn't pay to dwellers. This international fund usually goes to farm owners that almost are governments. Therefore, it doesn't arrive in residents. Also, there is no guarantee that governments appropriately use this money to protect forests. Hence, applying this way is an inadequate solution for protecting forests.
Finally, the passage expresses that the international fund is a motivation for the proliferation of biodiversity in forests. While the professor retorts this notion and points out that people in this region might use this fund for planting trees with commercial purposes. If people only plant trees that have a commercial profit for them, biodiversity will not occur. Therefore, it could not be an effective way.
Although the writer brings three reasons to say that the international fund is an efficient manner to protect forests, the lecture makes a reasonable argument against it to demonstrate applying this way is not proper.
