The lecture and the passage discuss the theories that can explain the mass extinction of a large number of species in the Triassic period. The passage states although, we do not know what happened exactly, there are some possible explanations. whereas, the professor argues against the theories stated by passage.

First, the reading claims that one explanation could be the decline of sea levels that led to the destruction of the habitats for species that live in the shallows and coastal lands. Thus, that happen affected worldwide food chains and finally, lead to mass extinction. However, the lecturer, argues against this explanation and states that although sea level decreased in that period, it did happen gradually in several million years and such a mass extinction needs a much more sudden cause.

Second, the passage points out another explanation that is about massive climate cooling due to an increase of SO2 because of widespread volcanic activities in that period. As a result of this climate cooling, many species died. However, the lecturer believes although the content of SO2 in the atmosphere was high in that period, they didn't remain long enough in the air that led to such a massive extinction. They were brought back to the earth with the help of rainwater.

Finally, the reading mentions another idea that is about asteroid striking to the earth that causes a lot of destruction such as displacing of soils and crushing of rocks which led to the spreading of debris into the air for a long period. As a result, sunlight didn't receive the surface for a long time which caused all plants and species to die. The lecture disagrees with this theory and believes, there is no evidence that can prove an asteroid has collided to the earth since 12 million years before the extinction.

Although the passage brings three possible theories that can explain the cause of mass extinction, the professor believes they aren't the true cause of the extinction.
