The main idea of both the lecture and the passage is whether a permanent human presence station on venus is possible or not. Considering this, the author poses some problems for maintaining human life On venus. The professor, on the other hand, challenges whatever contended in the reading by suggesting a new way to deal with the problems.
First, both the professor and the author talk about atmospheric pressure on venus. As claimed by the passage, pressure on the venus' surface is very high that can crush spacecraft in one hour. The lecturer, nevertheless, contradicts the author's view and explains that if the station floats fifty kilometers high in the venus' atmosphere, the pressure decreases dramatically and reaches the atmospheric pressure on earth. therefore, the crashing problem is solved in this way.
Second of all, both the lecture and the passage discuss vital substances for human life like water and oxygen. The passage goes to mentions that there is no water on the venus' surface and no oxygen or water vapor in its atmosphere. therefore, these elements should be carried to venus regularly. In contrast, the lecturer explains that there are plentiful sources of components like carbon dioxide and Sulfuric acid in Venus' atmosphere which can be used in chemical processes to produce water and oxygen. therefore, there is no demand to carry these vital substances to venus.
The last point discussed in the passage is that no sunlight can reach venus' surface because of the thickness of its atmosphere. this can cause a major problem in producing electricity. However, the professor rejects this by declaring that if the station float above in the venus' atmosphere some sunlight can filter through clouds and some reflections from clouds in the Venus’ atmosphere. solar cells can collect both sunlight directly and reflected light from clouds to generate electricity.
