The main idea of both the lecture and the passage is whether it is possible to travel to mars successfully in the coming decades like Moon mission or not. Considering this, the author poses some problems with sending humans to mars. The professor, on the other hand, challenges whatever contended in the reading by giving some solutions.
First, both the professor and the author talk about vital needs for human's life. As claimed by the passage, the duration of travel to mars is about two years. Therefore, it seems impossible to provide food, water, and oxygen in spacecraft for astronauts in this long journey. The lecturer, nevertheless, contradicts the author's view and explains that astronauts can grow plants in the water to eat. they can take various advantages of this method. One of the benefits of this cultivating method is that a little space is required. In addition, in this method plants can not only recycle waste water and produce fresh water but also can absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. As a result, life essential will not barrier for mars travel.
Second of all, the passage goes to mention that long travel to mars has some adverse effects on the astronauts' bodies such as bone density and muscle mass. However, the professor rejects this view by declaring that nowadays astronauts spend several months on the spacecraft. they learn some methods to deal with these problems for example, regular exercise and taking vitamins and calcium can help astronauts to keep muscle mass and bone density of their bodies.
The last point discussed in the passage is that some radiation from sun can be perilous for astronauts in the interplanetary space. Carrying a shield for protection from this radiation will not be a reasonable solution because of the surplus of weight to spacecraft. In contrast, the lecturer explains that all the radiation from sun are not dangerous. The sun occasionally produces harmful particles. Spacecarfect can equip with detector which monitors this dangerous radiation and small shield area which protects astronauts. astronauts can use this shielded area when they expose to dangerous radiations.
