Both the lecture and reading talk about agnostids which were extinct about 450 million years ago. The reading passage mentions three theories to states that agnostids how may have lived. On the other hand, the lecturer challenges what are stated in the passage by providing some strong reasons.
First of all, the reading highlights that agnostids were a type of free-swimming predators. Conversely, the speaker mentions that predators need developed eyes to chase their prey. However, agnostids were absolutely blind. Therefore, they need a different organ to capture their prey including some sensors. But there is no evidence of such organ on the fossil records.
Secondly, the author states that agnostids are sort of seafloor dweller. In contrast, the professor finds this theory dubious and refute it. She mentions that seafloor dwellers are not likely moving fast and often move slowly and are occupied in a small geographical area. While agnostids moved large distances fastly and there is no possibility that they may be a seafloor dweller.
Finally, the reading asserts that agnostids were paradise. However, the lecturer holds the view that the population of paradise is limit. Therefore, there are impossible that agnostids were paradise, because agnostids have a large number of population and if they were paradise, they may kill the environment wherein they lived.
Therefore, what is mentioned in the reading passage is completely refuted by the professor. First, they are blind animals that cannot catch their prey. Second, they are fast and move distances. Therefore, they cannot be a slow seafloor dweller. Finally, they have a large population and the theory that states they are paradise, is refuted by the professor.
