It is stated in the passage that agnostids were group of marine animals which got extinct about 450 years ago. From the study of the fossil remains, they were taken as the primitive arthropods relatives of modern day insects. It is believed that they live on the basis of three theories with comparisons made with other arthropods. The lecture casts doubt about each theory and pin point the serious weakness in the theories.
Firstly, to be free swimming predators, arthropods have large well developed eyes. As we all know, vision is the best way to chase the predators. However, agnostids had tiny eyes which were poorly developed and sometimes they were completely blind. If eyes were not that factor, they might had other sensory organs, which has not been found in their fossil study. So, this rules out the first theory of their living.
Secondly, agnostids are unlikely to live as sea- floor dwellers. The sea - floor dwellers move slowly and are found in the localized areas only such as a small geographical area of their origin. Whereas agnostids used to move from one place to another fast and they were found in wide areas in multiple geographical areas. Thus, the second theory also failed here.
Thirdly, population of parasites has to be small. If there is large population of parasites, they will kill off the host body. Therefore, agnostids can not be counted as parasites as they were in large population. It is not evident.
In conclusion, from the lecture, we have learnt the loopholes of three theories about agnostids and got further information regarding their way of living.
