The professor in the lecture shows strong doubt over writer arguments ans she says coins discovered in Maine is a genuine evidence of historical evidence.
At the beginning, even though the reading paragraph suggests that, the distance between the Mine site and the Norse settlements in Canada is more that a thousand kilometers, is the coin was discovered is located very far from other sites documenting a Norse presence in North America. But the lecturer argues that, many other objects were found in Maine site from far distance. Native who lived in Maine site were interested to obtain objects from other locations, and they might reached to Norse settlements and brought back coins to their sites.
Second, despite the statements in the reading passage that, no other coins have been found at the Canadian sites that were inhabited by the Norse, so Norse did not bring any silver coins with them to their North America settlements. The professor contends that, Norths did not create permanent settlements, and they packed up their objects. Therefore, it is possible that they left some coins when they returned, and native took coins back to their site.
Finally, the author asserts that, norse who traveled to North America would have understood that silver coins would most like be useless to them because native north americas did not recognize silver coins as money. While the professor proves that this claim is indefensible by pointing out that, North knew native North America valued attractive and unusual objects, and silver coins were attracted them because they could make neglects or other jewelry with them, thus Norse used silver coins for trade with them.
