TPO-44 - Integrated Writing Task In 1957 a European silver coin dating to the eleventh century was discovered at a Native American archaeological site in the state of Maine in the United States. Many people believed the coin had been originally brought to

The reading and the speaker discussing about silver coin as evidence for that Norse may be settled in North America more than 1000 years ago but both of them argue with different perspective point of view.

Firstly, reading passage says that Norse's settlement in North America is mislead-ed by some one purposely so we can't take this silver coin as evidence for settlement of Norse and more Atlantic ocean is great distance from the Europe to America it highly impossible for them to travel such long distance. But the lecturer argues this point by stating that they used to travel such long distance within the country so it is possible for them to cross long distance.

Secondly, reading passage claims that archaeologist didn't more coins in the North america so Norse may be not early settler in North america. But the professor refutes this by saying that Norse did not stay in North america permanently so they might have taken the silver coins along with them while returning to Europe.

Thirdly, reading passage suggests that North american never recognised as commodity, so North american may be had any trading with Norse. Even though speaker accept this point, he explains the reason for that in different way. He states that the North american attracted to silver so they might had made all silver coins into the jewels and other ornaments too. This evidence that they had trade with Norse.

To sum up, the reading passage says that distance, non availability of more coins suggests that the Norse was not early settler in north america but the speaker refutes these all points.
