The article states that the theory of existence of Bees on Earth as early as 200 million years ago is doubtful and provides three reasons to support the idea that the fossil structure have been found in Arizona were not created by bees. However, the professor explains that the reasons are not convincing and it is possible that the fossil nest was made by bees and refutes each of the author’s reasons.
First, the reading passage states that no fossils of actual bees have ever founded that date to 200 million years ago. In contrast, the lecture refutes this point by stating that a particular type of resin is required to preserving of fossils of bees. She states that maybe bees lived 200 million years ago, but during that time there were no trees to produce appropriate resin to preserve the fossils of bees.
Second, the article claims that bees and flowering plants have a mutually dependent biological relationship, and considering that 200 million years ago is the absence of flowering plants, so bees could not exist. Conversely, the professor contends that bees could exist before flowering plants by feeding from other trees like pine. Also, she says that after the evolving of flowering plants, bees adapted to feed from them.
Finally, the reading holds the view that the fossil structure lack details to prove that it was made by bees. However, the professor casts doubt this view and contends that investigation of chemical composition fossil nest revealed that the fossil contains the same water proofing component that modern bees produce to water proof their nests.
