The reading is providing the points and the reasons of skeptics about the presence of bees 200 million years ago. The professor explaines that all the reasons in the reading are not-convincing and the presence of bees is quite possible in 200 million years ago.
First, she agrees that there is not any fossil of actual bees date back to 200 million years ago but it do not refute the possibility of presence of bees at that time. She clarifies that fossils were preseved by the tree's resin. In 200 million years ago this kind of trees were very rare. Therefore, it could be possible that there were bees at that time but not preserved as fossils because there were not any resin trees.
Also, professor states that it is true that flowering plant were not living at that time. It is possible that at that time bees were feeding on not flowering plants like ferns and pine trees and adapted to them. So, after presence of flowering plants they change their feeding style and their relationship with flowering plants became stable.
Lastly, the lecturer explaines that lack of spiral caps which protect the product of bees from water was provided by water proof substance and in fossilized structures this water proof materials are in favor of bees making them not any other insects. Therefore, the third reasons of the reading also was refuted by speaker.
