TPO 48 Integrated Writing Task

The reading and lecture are both about declining population of frog species. The author of the reading talks about three methods to solve this problem. The lecturer challenges the claims made by author. She is of the opinion that these methods have many negative sides.
To begin with, the author argues that people can expand frog species by reducing pesticides. In the article, it is said that once pesticides enter a frog’s body, they attack the nervous system, leading to severe breathing problems. This specific argument is challenged by lecturer. She claims that this method is not economically beneficial. It is very expensive to do for farmers. Additionally, she says that these methods have many disadvantages for farmers. They would lose more crops by declining pesticides from farmland.
Secondly, the writer suggests that a second major factor in declining of frog species is fungus. The article mentions that the fungus causes thickening of the skin, and since frogs use their skin to absorb water, infected frogs die of dehydration. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that people must kill fungus species individually, and it is very complicated to implement. She elaborates on this by bringing up the point that treats have to be applied again and again to completely kill fungus population, but this method have also negative sides. It is very complicated and expensive.

Finally, the author posits that since most frog species lay their eggs in water, they are dependent on water and wetland habitats, but people use excessive water and drain wetlands to make them suitable for development. Moreover, it is stated in the article that If key water habitats such as lakes and marshes were better protected from excessive water use and development, many frog species would recover. In contrast, the lecturer’s position is that excessive water use is not a major problem. She claims that global warming is a chief factor of frog species’ decreasing. This causes entire system to extinct, and these species also suffer from it.
