The reading passage asserts that humpback whales which migrate long distances use stars for navigating. Although the speaker claims that this reason is fascinating, she finds all reasons unconvincing and provids some evidence to refute them all.
First, the author argues that due to humpbacks whales' intelligence, they use stars to navigate by, because they are intelligent. In contrast, the speaker states that there is no relationship between intelligence and using stars to navigate by. For example, birds and ducks use stars to navigate by, but ducks are not intelligent animals and its intelligence is average. So, the animal's intelligent does not prove using stars to navigated by.
Second, the reading passage asserts that humpback whales migrate in straight lines which means they orient themselves by some external objects or forces like stars. On the contrary, The professor brings the idea that animals have a substance in the brain, biomagnetic, which makes the animal sensitive to earth magnetic field, and animals use the biomagnetic rather than stars for navigation.
Finally, the reading passage asserts that humpback whales exhibit an unusual behavior which is known as spy-hopping. By this way, they look at stars which are providing them information to navigated by. The speaker takes an opposite viewpoint and believes that spy-hopping has nothing to do. For example, sharks have this ability and not only they do not migrate and do not look at the stars, but also the use this ability for hunting.
