The article states that humpback whales manage to migrate over long distances by using stars as navigation and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor states that the theory of humpback whales to use stars while travelling long distances seems fascinating and he refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading avers that humpback whales are so intelligent to use stars to navigate by. Conversely, the professor opposes this point by saying that there is no connection between being intelligent and navigating by stars. He explains that there are many animals species that are average intelligent and using stars when migrated, such as ducks. Also, animals who have the ability to use stars as navigation is by their instinct and not by being smart as the author would like us to believe.
Second, the article posits that since whales migrate in straight lines, they orient themselves by relying on stars. The professor, on ther hand, states that there is another explanation that animals orient themselves by objects or forces, for example, the Earth magnitude. Humpback whales have a substance in their brains, called bio magnitude, which is sensitive to the earth magnetic field. Therefore, these whales are directed by the earth force, and not by stars.
Third, the reading claims that spy-hopping helps whales to looking at the stars to find their ways. The professor disagrees with point by saying that spy-hopping have nothing to do with navigation. Though this behavior is rare, sharks do have this behavior but, they do not migrate. However, they use this behavior to searching for preys to catch them. So, the point of spy-hopping is helping whales to naviagte is pure speculation.
