TPO 52- Asteroids are large space objects made of rock and ice. There are hundreds of thousands of asteroids in our solar system. Though we often hear ideas about establishing colonies of humans to live and work on our Moon or our neighboring planet, Mars

The main idea if both the reading and the lecture is about the asteroid colonization by human beings. Although the reading mentions three reasons why establishing colonies on asteroids are practical, the lecturer finds them not useful which cause some serious drawbacks.

First of all, the reading mentions that taking off and landing on asteroids would be safe due to the low gravity of asteroids. However, the lecturer explains that landing on asteroids is not as probable as we think and low gravity can contribute serious damages including astronauts' health problems. For example, exposing to low gravity can cause reduction of muscles mass and lower the bone density for a few months of being exposed in lower gravity, let alone that some trips may take longer than usual.

Furthermore, the author states that some asteroids can provide their sponsors or colonists great amount of invaluable metals and raw materials such as gold and platinum. The lecturer, on the other hand, states that this would not be a gainful idea and some other aspects should be considered. Not only should colonists take into account the high costs of equipment and transportation of those materials, but also they have to pay more attention to the fact that these expenditures would decrease the amount of profit and outcome. The more the quantity of those metals are brought back to the earth, the less the price of them will become due to the larger material supplies. Thus, their price in markets would be lowered.

Eventually, the reading claims that since asteroids can be either pass through the Earth periodically or stay close to the Earth, landing on them and getting back from them would be much easier. In contrast, according to the lecturer, while getting into the asteroids would be achievable, getting back from them would not be as possible as their landings. Some of them my either stay in the vicinity of the Earth or travel farther than Mars or Moon which would be so problematic.
