TPO 52 integrated essay

In the lecture, the professor discusses why colonizing asteroids would not be practical and what are the downsides of the reading points. On the other hand, the reading mentions that sending people to an asteroid would be the best colonization option for several reasons.

First, although low gravity makes it easy for spaceships to take off and land on an asteroid, it has major negative effects on people's bodies as it decreases their muscle mass and bone density. In fact, most of the astronauts suffer from these side effects even if they were there for a short period of time, two months, for example. Thus, people could not manage to live in a low gravity environment for a long time. The article, however, casts doubt on this point by saying asteroids have low gravity, which makes it easier for spacecraft to land and take off.

Second, the lecturer asserts that mining for precious metals may seem profitable; however, the costs of doing this are likely to be very high. Moreover, there is no guarantee that the price of selling these metals would be the same. It is most likely that the market price would decrease as the supply of these metals increases. This challenges the text, which points out that asteroids could be a great source of raw materials as many of them have valuable metals.

Finally, the professor claims that it might be easy to reach an asteroid but it could be challenging to return to the Earth. This is due to the fact that asteroids have unusual orbits, which in one point could be close to the Earth and in another point may be farther than Mars. This refutes the reading, which asserts that some asteroids get close to the Earth even closer than our moon.
