The reading and the lecture are both about the salinity of Salton sea in California and solutions to reduce its salinity in order to save it from too much evaporation and excess levels of salinity. the author of the reading feels that the lake would eventually become too salty to support the life of the living organisms that live within it and they think there are several ways to reduce the effect of evaporation. the lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. she is of the opinion that while the solutions offered by the author could reduce salinity and save the lake, they are not perfect solutions and without faults.
To begin with the author suggests that one way of reducing the salinity of the lake is directly removing salt from it by constructing facilities that can heat the lake water in order to evaporate it so that the salt and minerals would be left behind in a special chamber and the water would be returned to the lake without salt. the lecturer however challenges this argument. she claims that while essentially evaporating water in order to reduce its salinity could work, but the minerals that are left behind by the evaporation could be toxic like Selenium which pose a health threat to people if its inhaled after getting spread by the wind.
Secondly the author argues that the salinity of the lake could be reduced by injecting water from the ocean and diluting it. the article mentions that this method needs pipelines and canals for the ocean water delivery. the lecturer however, rebuts this by saying that building canals and pipelines are costly specially over the long distance that they need to be built and the government may not accept funding the project.
Finally the author suggests that the salinity can be reduced by building walls and dividing the lake into different parts. in the article it is stated that the ocean water could be delivered into the main larger part of the lake while the smaller part can increase in salinity. the lecturer opposes this by mentioning that the area the lake is located is prone to earthquakes and seismic activities. so dividing the lake by building walls can end up failing because earthquakes can destroy the walls and the water in the lake will eventually get mixed.
