TPO 52- Asteroids are large space objects made of rock and ice. There are hundreds of thousands of asteroids in our solar system. Though we often hear ideas about establishing colonies of humans to live and work on our Moon or our neighboring planet, Mars

The lecture and the reading are both about the feasibility of colonizing asteroids. The author of the reading feels that asteroids compared to planets like Mars are our best colonization options and offers some reasons for his argument. The lecturer however disagrees saying that asteroid colonization is not practical and casts doubts on the reasons proposed by the author.

To begin with the author argues that the low gravity of asteroids allows the space crafts land more easily and safely on the asteroids and additionally the craft's take off would be easier as well and overall the craft would need a lot less fuel. The lecturer however challenges this claim by saying that low gravity can have risks for the people that are going to live on the asteroids, because low gravity causes muscle mass and bone density to shrink and as an example the lecturer mentions astronauts who have these problems with their relatively shorter stay in space.

Second the reading mentions the profits that can be made from mining rare valuable metals on the asteroids and how this profit could sustain the stay on the asteroid. In contrast the lecturer brings up the point that the cost of colonizing and transferring the metals to earth is substantially high so the mining is not so profitable. He also mentions that since the supply of rare metals by doing the mining increases, there is no guarantee that their value would stay the same.

Finally the author mentions the distance that needs to be traveled in order to reach the asteroids and how this distance is much less from Earth compared to a planet like Mars since asteroids sometimes orbit near Earth. Conversely the lecturer states that while the asteroids may be easy to travel to, the journey back to Earth will not be so easy because asteroids while orbiting can be at one point really close to earth and at another further from earth than a planet like mars and foreseeing this is difficult.
