TPO 8: the Chevalier's memoir accuracy
The reading claims that the accuracy of memoir written by the Chevalier is not right and he inevts many events in it. Nevertheless, the professor cast dount on it and believe that the memoir are pretty accurate and reliable for historians.
First, the reading states that the Chevalier was not wealthy because he borrowed considerable sums of money from a Swiss merchant. However, the speaker states that borrowing money does not mean the Chevalier was poor. He has a lot of assets that sold it for parties and gambling. Therefore, the Chevalier was waiting for his money to arrive and because of that, he borrowed some money.
Second, according to the lecture, the Chevalier completed his memoir after many years that he meets the Voltairs. Hence, it is not possible to remember all the conversation accurately. In contrast, the lecturer explains that the Chevalier each night after meeting Voltaire wrote about what he remembered about their conversation. Some witnesses exist that say he consult with others and kept writing for many years.
Third, based on the passage, critics believe that the escape of the jail is just for making his reading more enjoyable. Since the Chevalier had a lot of politically well-connected friends, he was able to bribe the jailer and escape the prison. On the contrary, the speaker asserts that many other prisons have more powerful friends than the Chevalier but they could not escape the prison. Also, the ceiling of the Chevalier was repaired after his escape and because of that we can accept he escape from ceiling.
