TPO extra 3, anting
The passage and the lecture are both about a phenomenon called anting in which after picking up the ant they rub it on their feather. According to this phenomenon the author of the passage is of an opinion that this habit in birds have some benefits. On the other hand, the professor contradicts each of the claims addressed by the author. He thinks it is unclear whether this activity has benefits for birds or not.
To begin with, the author believes that this action is occured in order to relieve skin irritation that birds feel in summer. This claim is challenged by the lecturer. He accepts this happened in summer but he think it is not because of the fact that the passage mentions. However, he holds an opinion that this is only because ants are more active in the summer than other seasons so it makes easier for birds to find small insects and catch them.
Secondly, the reading passage asserts that fowls rub ant on their feathers because they want to make a protection layer on their body to be safe from parasites. According to the researched mentioned by the lecture, the professor believes it is not reasonable to consider this action as a protection since the scholars have rebuted it.
Finally, the author of the passage indicates that by rubing ants on body, birds make those creatures ready to be eatten after elliminating bitter taste from them. The professor says if it is true, why they rub anything they found on their body instead of ants. He mentions that they do the same action with cigarette or soups. It is obvious they do not eat neither cigarette nor soup. In other words, he believe it is only an instinctive behavior.
