Both the reading passage and the listening are about a fossil skeleton of a dinosaur called Sinosauropteryx. Although the article suggests the reasons to prove that Sinosauropteryx didn't have feather, but the lecturer believes the evidences are strong enough to say that Sinosauropteryx had feather and that the critics discussed in the article aren't convincing.
To oppose with the first issue that the fine lines are the result of decomposition of the dinosaur's skin into fiber, the lecturer points to the fact that animals burried in the volcanic ash in the same site of the mentioned fossil, were finely preserved without being decomposed, and it's very unlikely that the lines might be due to decomposition. And thus the idea of skin decomsitioned into fiber is not probable.
In addition, in contrast to the claim saying that the lines are more probable to be fossilized remains of frills, the lecturer points to some chemical differences between feather and frill. It sounds like that the protein in feather and frill is different, and as the paleontologists found the same protein in the fossil as in feather not frill, this is a strong evidence that rejects the possibility of frills rather than feather.
Finally, the reading passage asserts that feather was functionless for Sinosauropteryx since the lines were along the backbone and tail of it, but ignores that feather has other benefits besides helping animals fly or regulating body temperature. For instance, the lecturer points to peackok that uses its beautiful tail feather to attract males and this usage is called display function. As the studies show, Sinosauropteryx had colorful feather in orange and white and consequently, we come to this conclusion that the feather was not only useless but also beneficial for Sinosauropteryx in mating. And the lecturer believes all these issues strongly suggest that Sinosauropteryx did have feather.
