The lecture and the reading both discuss the decline in the sea cow population. the reading states that there are three theories to support the decline of the sea cow decline. However, the lecture disagrees. It claims that the three reasons mentioned in the reading are not convincing.

First, the reading states that over hunting of the sea cow by the native people was the main cause of the decline in the population. For example, the sea cows were consider to be a good sources of food. However, the lecture refutes this point by saying that over hunting was not the main cause of decrease in the population. According to the professor, the sea cows were massive in size. For example, a couple of sea cows could feed a village of native people for a month.

Second, the reading argues that disturbance in the ecosystem is another cause. For example, the decrease in the number of the Kelp, which is the main sources of food to the sea cow lead to decline. But, the lecture disagrees. it claims that the disturbance in the ecosystem is unlikely the min cause of the decline. For example there were no reports in any decrease in other marine animals like the whales who also depend on kelp.

Lastly, the reading states that European fur trader lead to decline. For example they kill a large number of sea cows for their fur which lead to extinction. Yet, the lecture disagrees. It claims that the European were not responsible. The decline already happened before the arrival of the trader to the island. So there are another reason responsible for the decline.
