The reading and the lecture are both about the surprising behaviors of elephants. The author of the reading believes that the some abilities are inherent in this giant mammals. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. She thinks those beliefs are all misunderstanding.

First of all, the author points out that elephants know their time of dying. It is mentioned that the old elephants always leave their herd and go to some places near water to die alone, which are so called 'elephant graveyards'. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She says the reason that elder elephants depart from their herd is because they worn out their teeth and lose the ability of chewing. They have no choice but to move to the place where they can find soft vegetation to eat.

Secondly, the author contends that they are able to paint recognizable things. The article notes that they can use trunk to hold the brush and make the drawing of flower and even themselves. The lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests this faculty is due to training by humans. She elaborates on this by mentioning that people strike elephants' ears which are very sensitive to force them to remember certain patterns of paintbrush and then encourage them to repeat some actions by touching their ears.

Finally, the author states that they are scared of mice. The article establishes that a recent experiment shows elephants retreat each time when the mice show up in their sight. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that the explanation is those elephants are unfamiliar with mice. She puts forth the idea that in some places where mice are common, elephants show no fear to them, such as zoo.
