TPO17: integrated writing task
The main topic of both the reading passage and the lecture is about the effects of the human population and agricultural growth on birds' population. The reading claims that the growth of the human population has had detrimental effects on the population of birds. However, the speaker finds all of the arguments in the reading unconvincing and presents some evidence to refute them all.
First of all, the reading asserts that an increase in the human population results in a decrease in birds habitats like grasslands and wetlands and consequently results in a decrease in the population of birds. On the contrary, the lecturer underlines the fact that the growth of urban areas has not resulted in a uniform decrease in all birds' population. It provides a larger and better habitat for some species like seagull and pageants. Also, the population of some birds which prey on pageant has also increased.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that the growth of agriculture that is the direct consequence of population growth has resulted in the conversion of wilderness areas to agricultural fields and as a result, the bird population would continue the declining trend. Conversely, the lecturer mentions the issue that nowadays in most of the countries, especially the USA, the introduction of new crops which produce more product per area of land has resulted in less and less need for lands. Hence, fewer wildernesses are destroyed these days.
Finally, the reading claims that the use of toxic pesticides in agriculture enters the food chain and has negative effects on birds' population. When birds drink the contaminated water or poisoned insects they may die. Also, it has detrimental effects on their reproduction. Therefore, their population will continue the declining trend. In contrast, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that these days people use new pesticides that are less toxic and have fewer negative effects. Also, there is a tendency toward growing more pest resistance crops which will eliminate the need for pesticides. Therefore, the projection of the author about the declining trend of birds population is not correct.
