TPO 24: integrated writing task
The main idea of both the reading passage and the lecture is about the discovery of a T.rex fossil and whether it contains actual tissues of the animal or not. The author of the passage mentions three pieces of evidence which indicate that the fossil has remnants of tissue. However, the lecturer refutes those evidence due to some reason.
First of all, the author points to the branching channels inside the bone which were the place of the blood vessel, and the presence of soft tissues inside the channel that represent blood vessels of T.rex. Conversely, the speaker claims that these are not necessarily soft tissue. Instead, the bacteria which live in hollow channels have left a trace of organic material that looks like soft tissue.
Secondly, The lecturer asserts that there are spheres in the inner part of the bone and contain iron which is the main constituent of a blood cell. Also, these spheres are of the same size as the blood cells and have a dark red center. Hence, it is probable that they are red blood cells. However, the lecturer rejects this assertion by implying that the fossil of other animals also contains something like these. The primitive animals which did not have red blood cells. Therefore it is not likely that those red spheres are the remains of red blood cells. They may have another origin. Maybe they are just reddish mineral.
Finally, the author mentions that the result of an experiment shows that the bone contains collagen. Collagen is the basic component of living bone tissue. On the other hand, the lecturer rebuts this claim by declaring that collagen usually does not last over 100 years. Hence, it is not possible that 70 million years old fossil contains this protein. It should come from a recent source. For instance, human skin contains collagen and it is possible that collagen of the researcher's hand who was handling the bone has stuck to the bone.
