TPO23: integrated writing task
The main topic of both the reading passage and the lecture is about a decline in the yellow cedar population in northeastern North America. The author of the reading proposes three hypotheses for this phenomenon. However, the lecturer believes the author's explanations are not adequate and convincing.
First of all, the author mentions the rule of insect parasites that have larvae that feed on cedar wood and kill the trees. By contrast, the lecturer refutes this premise by stating that healthy yellow cedar trees are resistance to parasites as their saturated with a powerful chemical substance which is poisonous for beetle larvae. Hence, beetles larvae can merely attack damaged or already died trees.
Secondly, the author claims another possible candidate for cedar population reduction would be bears that feed on cedar bark as it contains sugar. The aggressive behavior of bears in feeding damages the trees and weaken them. On the other hand, the speaker refuses this assertion by pointing out that yellow cedars populations have been declined in some locations that are not the habitat of bears. Therefore bears can not be responsible for overall population decline as it has occurred with or without the presence of the bears.
The final speculation that the author proposes is gradual climate change that has an impact on the root system of yellow cedar trees. It forces the surface roots to grow in late winter. Therefore these roots are more susceptible to freezing on cold nights. These frozen roots gradually kill the tree. On the contrary, the speaker rejects this hypothesis by referring to the fact that in lower elevations which have warmer climate more yellow cedar die rather than higher elevation that has lower temperatures. Hence, frozen roots can not consider as a factor for cedars population decline.
