TPO45-Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific points made in the reading passage
The main idea of both the reading passage and the lecture is about whether bees have existed on earth since 200 million years ago or not. While the author holds a skeptical view about this issue, the lecturer gives some logical reasons which indicate bees' existence on earth dates back to 200 million years ago.
First of all, the author avers that the as earliest bees' fossils relate to 100 million years ago hence there were not any bees on earth earlier that time. The lecturer, however, believes that this evidence is not convincing. She explains that resin is an essential element to preserve bees and as 200 million years ago trees which produce resin were rare, there is not any bees' fossil remain related to that time. Hence, it is possible that bees have existed since 200 million years ago.
Secondly, the author asserts that bees have a close association with flowering plants and depend on them for feeding. As flowering plants first appeared on earth 125 million years ago it is not likely that bees existed 200 million years ago. The lecturer, however, believes that it is not an indication of bees' nonexistence. She clarifies that 200 million years ago bees fed on nonflowering plants like ferns and pine trees and later with the appearance of flowering plants established a new relation.
Finally, the article claims that fossilized structures found in Arizona lack of some fine details of modern bees' nests. For instance, they lack caps with spiral patterns and it can be concluded that these nests have been made by other kinds of insects. Conversely, the lecturer opposes this viewpoint by pointing out that there is some chemical evidence which supports the theory that bees made those chambers. She explains that modern bees use special water-resistance material in order to protect their nests from water and remained fossilized chambers in Arizona also contain this chemical material and indicate that these chambers have been made by bees.
