The author in the reading puts forward three explanations of the yellow cedar decline, whereas the professor refutes that unsound is each of these explanation.

To begin with, the author contends that insect parasites, accurately the cedar bark beetle are the main reasons that caused the reduction in the yellow cedar's population. However, the professor contends that those small insects are not the fundamental cause of the decline. Since its barks and leaves contain a high percentage of powerful chemicals which is detrimental to the insects, the yellow cedar is much more resistant than any other types of trees. As a consequence, hardly would a healthy cedar suffer from insects' damages.

Secondly, the author ascribes the decline in cedar to brown bears in this hypothesis. On the contrary, the professor deems that though brown bears destroy some cedars, they should not responsible for the overall fall of population. The professor adds that both mainland and islands are vulnerable to the decline of cedar, but in the latter some islands there exists no bears at all.

Finally, the author points out that gradual volatilities of climate may contribute to the decrease in the yellow cedar's population, and the cold temperatures in the winter nights lead to frozen roots which threatens the health of the whole tree. As a refutation, the professor states that the exposure of roots in cold winters would not kill the trees. Given one factor left in consideration, more yellow cedars are died in low elevation where the weather is warm.
