The reading and the lecture are both contradicting with each other, in terms of underwater sound namely quackers. The author of the article presented three theories about the cause that leads to producing odd sounds. However, the lecturer casts doubt about the claim presented in the passage and negates all the arguments explained in the article.
First of all, according to the article, the sound might be the orca sound, which could be generated by male and female whales to attract a mate underwater. On the contrary, the speaker undermines the arguments presented in the article. Furthermore, she discusses that whales usually live near the surface water of the ocean, and on the other hand, submarine stays in the deep in the ocean. Additionally, there were no whales detected nearby the submarine. Thus, the idea of the orca sound is not convincing.
Secondly, the author posits that the sound might have been produced by the giant squid since their complex brain has the ability to produce such sound. Although the lecturer refutes this by asserting that the sound of giant squid have been detected by the submarine for two decades between 1960 to 1980, and afterward, the submarine has not detected this type sound till now, however, the giant squid is still living in the same area where submarine are present. So, it is impossible that the sound was detected only two decades, and then suddenly it disappeared. Hence, this theory is not acceptable.
Finally, it is mentioned in the paragraph that some secret submarine from the other country were present in that area, and the sound might have been generated by this submarine. On the other hand, the speaker again opposes this solution and describes that if there was any other submarine present, it must have created sound by the engine of that submarine or the submarine might have been detected by the detectors. Additionally, it is impossible to make such engines by the technology which can drive the submarine without making sound, and scientist have not developed submarine which can run so fast that it cannot be able to detect through sonar detectors.
