whether it would be possible to maintain a permanent human presence on venus is the focus of both the writer and the professor. In the writing, three challenges, including great atmospheric pressure, no reservoirs of water and very little sunlight, have been elaborated. The professor, however, claims that these problems can be solved by constructing a floating station and a permanent human presence on venus would be possible.

As opposed to the writer’s idea that all spacecrafts landing on venus would be crushed by the extreme pressure, the professor states that building a floating station can solve the issue. he advances the theory by saying that the pressure at the 50 kilometers up in the atmosphere is equal to the normal pressure on Earth, so the spacecrafts landing on the station would have no risk of being crushed.

The professor continues to discredit the writing’s assertion that there are no reservoirs of water on venus’s surface, by examining the fact that venus’s surface contains compounds such as carbon dioxide and sulfuric compounds. In detail, he points out that theses compounds can be used to produce oxygen and water during chemical process, so it is not necessary to import oxygen and water.

it is the professor’s third argument that there is enough sunlight to generate electricity, which contradicts the view of the writer that the thickness of the clouds limits the amount of sunlight reaching the venus’s surface. To explore deeper, the clouds on a higher level are not thick so that there is sufficient sunlight to generate power; the sunlight reflected by the clouds can be still used by the cells of the power station.

An apparent divide exists between the writer and the professor on whether it is possible to maintain a permanent human presence on venus.
