To deal with the problem that birds fly through glass windows, the passage suggests three possible solutions. However, the lecturer thinks none of them works.
Regarding to the issue of one-way glass, the passage thinks replacing regular glass with one way glass can prevent birds from flying through the glass, while the lecturer points out that it is ineffective. To birds from outside, one-way glass acts as mirrors. The birds cannot distinguish between reflection and open air and will fly through the glass.
Furthermore, the passage suggests to use colorful design to paint the glass. On the contrary, the lecturer states that birds think the opening of the glass as holes and will fly through it. To prevent this, the opening has to be extremely small, which makes the building dark.
Last but not least, the passage assures that creating magnetic field can guide the bird away from the building. In contrast, the lecturer challenge this by stating that birds use magnetic field to guide them only when travelling through long distance. During short distance trips, birds use their sight to navigate them, and the magnetic field is unlikely to guide them away from the building.
