Both the article and the lecture are about whether is there any solution to address the problem of glass windows being harmful to birds or not. In this vein, the author of the article brings up 3 ideas to make glasses noticeable for birds. Meanwhile, the professor believes that these approaches are not practical and refutes them all.
First, the author suggests putting one-way glasses, which are transparent from one direction, in a way that their reflective surface face outdoors. The professor, conversely, disagrees with this method and explains that the reflective side performs like a mirror. As the bird also doesn't perceive the mirror, presumes that the picture of the sky or a tree in the window is real and flies toward it. Therefore, one-way glasses are as destructive as traditional ones.
Second, the author proposes utilizing colorful glasses. However, the professor opposes this idea and asserts that the colorless parts of these glasses may make the birds think that there is a hole in the glass. In this way, if they want to pass through that illusionary holes, they get hurt. On the other hand, if the entire glass gets painted, it blocks most of the light, which in turn makes the indoor space of the house dark.
Third, the author offers to profit from the natural magnetic sensor of birds and create a strong magnetic field to make them redirect their flight way. In contrast, the professor rebuts this notion and describes that birds apply their magnetic sensing ability to travel long distances, such as migrating from north to south. Additionally, he points out that birds use their eyes and the brightness of the light to navigate in short routes. Consequently, the magnetic field on the glasses would be neither practical nor effective.
