In the reading passage, the author proposes several reasons that the silver coin is fake, which is cast serious doubt on by the listening passage argues that the coin confirm the contacts between European explorers and native Americans.
Firstly, as the author claims, the place for discovery of the coin is far away from where Norse had ever been. On the contrary, the speaker points out that it is possible for native speaker to take coin away from the original site since there are some other objects being found far away from the site they should be. Researchers thought that it is likely the native Americans they traveled from Maine and when they got the coin they traveled back and took back the coin. Therefore, the coin has some connection with the explorer, which proves the first point of view is incorrect.
Secondly, the writer believes that no other coins were found at the Canadian sites means Norse didn't carry coins with him and the silver coin must be a fake. However, the lecturer refutes that no other coins left doesn't mean he never took coin here. Norse was not permanent resident and he wouldn't settle in America, so when he went back to Europe he would pack up valuable things like coins. Maybe all the other coins had already been taken back with him. Accordingly, it is possible that the coin comes from Norse, which clashes with the second idea of reading passage.
Finally, the author insists that Norse knew that coin was useless for American at that time because they didn't see them as money. In contrast, the professor contends with the reading passage again arguing that although the coin has no use for currency it did appeal to native Americans. American people might be attracted by the unusual things. The coin was so beautiful for them and they could use them as necklace and finally trade the coin as jewelry. Therefore, it is useful for native Americans to have the coin, which challenges the last viewpoint of author.
