The reading passage states that the silver coins brought by Norse discovered in Maine might not be genuine. However, professor thinks the coins were not fake.
First, the passage suggests that the distance between the Maine and other Norse settlements is very far, suggesting that there was no connection between them. Professor opposes it by demonstrating that there are other objects that was coming from far place were found in Maine, which means that the silver coins were capable to be transport between great distance, the native American lived in Maine were able to obtain it.
Second, author states that there was no coins found in Canada, indicating that Norse did not bring silver coin with them. Whereas, the professor gives her opinion that Norse did not make any permanent settlements, they went back to Europe and packed up valuable things like coins with them to go to America again, which points out that they did bring coins with them.
Third, the reading material proposes that the silver coins are useless in America since Native Americans could not understand the value of it. Unfortunately, in the lecture, the woman indicates that Native Americans liked things that are beautiful and appealing so they could use it to make neck lace or other things. Norse could use silver coins to make trade with them.
