The reading states that in the New Mexico in the America Southwest, Chaco Canyon's habitants constructed their "great house" contains hundreds of rooms and often stand three or four stories high for several certain purposes. Archaeologists believe that the main factors for use of these great houses are based on three reasons.
First reason which the reading mentions is that the Chaco structures were constructed for living and they were homes for people. And those great houses look like to "apartment buildings" at Taos. However, the professor in the lecture states that the first reason in the reading is not supported because there are not any evidence to show fireplace for cooking in these houses. People for cooking need to have fireplace.
Second, the reading declares that these houses were place for storing grain maize for long period of time in the future. However, lecture don't accept the reading argument because of lack of evidence to display loft over of grain maize which spilled there.
Additional, the reading mentions that the Chaco Canyons buildings were place for ceremonial centers and people who had gathering there for festivals and ceremonies in that there were a pile of broken pots which throne away by people ate festive meals and the ceremonies are such as current Native American cultures. However, the lecture declares that there is not an evidence to support this idea because these pile of old materials contains building materials and pots are the dishes which workers who work there for construct buildings, use them for their foods.
