Essay topics:

In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay inorder to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent)of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option. The shortened workweek would increase company profits because employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work. Hiring morestaff to ensure that the same amount of work would be accomplished would not result in additional payroll costs because four-day employees would only be paid 80 percent of the normal rate. In the end, companies would have fewer overworked and error-prone employees for the same money, which would increase company profits. For the country as a whole, one of the primary benefits of offering this option to employees is that it would reduce unemployment rates. If many full-time employees started working fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be shifted to others. Thus, for every four employees who went on an 80 percent week, a new employee could be hired at the 80 percent rate. Finally, the option of a four-day workweek would be better for individual employees. Employees who could afford a lower salary in exchange for more free time could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, pursuing private interests, or enjoying leisure activities.

Question: Summarise the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading passage

The mandatory bill has been passed for the companies to reduce their working days from 5 days to 4 days per week. This is mainly based on reasons that it would consequently lead to higher savings in company due to cut in pay, efficacious result in the work of employees and improve the quality of life of employees too. However, the lecturer argues that this might not be the case because of several reasons.
Firstly, The lecturer present the view that the amount of money that could be saved by reducing the pay of employees to 80% of previous amount which they were being paid might not be significant when compared to new expenses resulted by addition of employees. The addition of new employees to cover the remaining workload might invite new expenses of office expenses, new computer, medical benefits which will eventually curtail the profit.
Secondly, The lecturer argues regarding the effect of implementation of this bill on the overall employment opportunities. The company might start over expecting from their employees and expect them to complete the work in four days which requires five days to be completed. This would create less job opportunities for new employees and reduce the quality of life of currently working employees due to hectic and stringent schedule.
Lastly, Lecturer also underscore the adverse effect that might result or the consequences that four day per week employee might face in contrast to employee who work five days per week. He states that during the economic insolvencies or crisis, the employee working 4 day per week might be first ones to lose the job. They might face problem in the promotion too. In addition to this, employees working four day per week might not be included in overall management activity.
Thus, the lecturer views are abovementioned about the effect that might result in implementation of mandatory bill in a different tone than the views mentioned in the passage.
