whether the portrait "Portrait Of An Elderly Woman in a White Boonet" by Rembrandt is an original piece or not.
Both in the reading passage and the lecture talks about whether the portrait "Portrait Of An Elderly Woman in a White Boonet" by Rembrandt is an original piece or not. The reading passage states that it is not original for three reasons that are: the way woman in the portrait is dressed is inconsistent, the light and shadow in the portrait does not fit and lastly the portrait is foumd to be painted on deveral pieces of wood glued together. But the lectur contradicts all the reasons given in the reading passage.
First of all, the author contends that the woman in the portrait is wearing a fur coat and accordinmg to author is a luxurious one and that time no servant could afford it. Rembrandt was a person who paid attention to details and this seemed inconsistent. But the lecturer contradicts this by saying that the fur collar wasn't there in original painting. The layer of fur collar was added on top of original painting by someone else hundreds of years after the original painting was made to increase the value of it.
Secondly, the author argues that Rembrandt was a master of painting light and shadow, but in the painting there elements do not fit together. The face appears to be illuminated by light below but gets absorbed by the fur collar and also appears partially in shadow due to dark fur collar The lecturer refutes these points by saying that when the fur collar is removed, one can see a simple original collar of light collar and it naturally reflects and illuminnates the face. And it looks realistic in reality instead of dark and under shadow.
Lastly, the reading claims that the painting is made on a panel made of several pieces of wood glued together. But the lecturer opposes by stating that the pieces of wood were glued later and were added to original painting to increase it's size. Additionally, the original painting is made on a single wood panel and that wood panel on examination is same as found in his self portrait. Hence, the lecturer concluded that the portrait "Portrait Of An Elderly Woman in a White Boonet" by Rembrandt is an original piece.
