This set of the material in the both reading and passage is about the Little Ice Age, which was a period of unexpected cold weather condition that happened in some parts of the world, caused, consequently, to result in growing glaciers. The reading provides three pieces of evidence indicating that there are some contributing factors which resulted in such phenomenon. The lecturer, nonetheless, refutes the author's claims by offering three counterclaims.
First, the reading posits that unusual hot weather might have been the reason for this phenomenon since it melted many glaciers which sent cold freshwater into Gulf stream. The lecturer, however, takes this view that disrupting Gulf stream happened in Europe, North of USA and Southern Africa. But the author's reason cannot be convincing explanation for such disruption in southern Africa. For this reason this idea is purely unconvincing.
Third, the passage sheds light on the fact that volcanic eruption produced too dust into atmosphere that blocked sun light. This led to reduction of the global temperature. The professor casts doubt on this point due to the fact that if this eruption was too serious, other people would not be able to see colorful sunset and sun. As a result, the idea of author is not accurate since it was reported many people saw snow and sun due to the less dust in the sky which is in direct contrast with the passage claims abou too many dust that blocked sunlight.
Third, the reading brings up this idea that during that period, the number of people populations had reduced. This means more trees, less carbon dioxide and cool climate. The speaker, conversely, disputes this point by arguing that although people population had reduced for a short time, they quickly started to grow back. They cut down trees for cultivation so that they could have enough food to feed on. Thus, this claim is less likely to have long-term global cooling effect.
