Both author and lecturer offer two opposing views on the how the Agnostids behaved. While the reading part lists three theories as the possible explanation for the Agnostids behavior, the professor counters these specific points and presents some clues to call into the question for the information mentioned in the text.
First of all, the reading passage mentions to the free-swimming predator's hypothesis as the feasible living habit for the Agnostids. However, the instructor casts doubt on the accuracy of this surmise. As she states, the open ocean predators should have the big and sharp eyes to be able to prey the animal. On the contrary, these animals owned the tiny eyes with the poor vision, or even some of them were blind. As a result, the Agnostids did not have this ability to prey. Even if they utilized the other sensory capabilities to rely on them for prey, there is no evidence in the fossils that the Agnostids possessed those features.
Next, meanwhile, the article posits that the Agnostids were the seafloor dwellers, the professor refutes this assumption. Based on her assertion, the seafloor dwellers do not have this ability to move fast, and they occupy in the consistent geographical spot, where they produced. On the other hand, there is evidence that Agnostids had been lived in the multiple areas, and they were widespread in a very fast pace which is not usual for the seafloor dwellers.
Finally, the passage assumes that they were the parasites since lots of modern-day arthropods are parasites. In the contrast, the lecturer challenges the validity of this claim by mentioning to the population of Agnostids. The population of parasites should be a limited number; otherwise, they will kill off whole big fishes. However, based on the fossils excavated there is a vast number of Agnostids, which opposes with the possibility of this assumption.
