In this set of material, the reading passage claims that Greek military used a weapon that was called "burning mirror “in fact a polished copper surface curved. It was focusing on Romans' ships and causing to catch fire, however the reading argues this had been a myth and then it brings up three reasons to support its idea. On the other hand the lecture finds all ideas dubious and provides some evidence to advocate that these reasons are not convincing, in fact the information the professor provides contradicts the fact outlined in the reading passage.
First, the reading passage proposes that Greek did not have such a technology for creating this device. It had to build from a large sheet of copper to have a precise ability parabolic curvature that did not exist in the ancient world. In contrast the professor declares that for having a mirror with parabolic curvature had not been needed to very large sheet, in fact Greek military used a large number of small individual sheet coppers that it was more effective.
Second, the author of readings contends that an experiment revealed that focusing the mirror on wooden ships to burn, take a long time and during this time, ship has to be steady without moving, conversely the professor believes that it is true about wood, however there were a lot of other materials on the ship for burning faster, like "Pech". Romans' ship had such a thing that it could catch fire in a few seconds, even if ship was moving.
Third, The Greek had another weapon was called flaming arrow that its function was approximately as burning mirror, so they did not need to build another weapon, on the contrary the lecture argues that Romans were familiar with this advice, so using it could have not been affect for a long time, and also when they were using from burning mirrors, soldiers of Roman could just see mirror, and suddenly they were facing with a huge massive of fire.
