Many people believe that educational standards have declined in recent times, particularly in the areas of literacy and numeracy. Discuss the causes of this problem and offer some possible solutions to it.
It remains undeniable that in recent times, the ability of people to read, write and do numeric calculations has declined considerably. Excessive use of computers, calculators and changes in classroom activities could be the major causes of this poor educational standards. It seems to be interestingly clear that actions need to be taken in order to address this issue.
To begin with, excessive use of computers has sky rocked over the past few years and covered almost every aspect of our life. As such, books and papers have been replaced by computers. Educational books, for instance, are found in soft copies. As this is quite easy and interesting way of learning, people are more familiar with the technologies than the learning materials. Another worrying trend is, changes in classroom activities. Students in many schools submit their tasks via the internet rather than doing on their notebooks.
It is clear that immediate action is required to solve this issue. Firstly, the real advantage of reading books should be emphasized. Instead of reading online, we should make a habit of reading and writing on papers. Moreover, teachers should encourage students to use pen and paper by assigning them tasks that are not done on computers. Use of calculator is essential but simple and normal calculations should be done using our own head. Most importantly, the use of smart phone in the field of education should be completely stopped.
In conclusion, the modern advancement like computers and calculators are promoting the people’s inability to read and write properly. Although, these advances have bought ease and effectiveness, the real benefit of reading books and writing on papers should always be emphasized in the field of education.
