The graph below shows the changes in maximum number of Asian elephants between 1994 and 2007.
The bar graph illustrates the dynamic in the greatest quantity of elephants in nine Asian countries from 1997 to 2004.
It is clear that over the following 7 years, elephant populations declined in most of the countries. While India always had the highest number of elephants, this figure in China was the lowest in both years.
In 1997, there were around 10000 elephants in India, followed by Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia, with 5200, 3800 and 3000, respectively. 2004 witnessed dramatic decreases in the population of elephants in three countries mentioned, especially Malaysia and Myanmar, in which these figures dropped by nearly three quarters. Cambodia is the only country where elephants showed signs of growth in the quantity, from 1200 to 1300 over the 7-year period.
The quantity of elephants in Vietnam and Laos did not change in general, at approximately 1100 in both years. China only had an insignificant number of elephants, just about 500 in 2004.
