The reading passage states that populations of the yellow cedar which is a species mostly grown in northwestern North America, have constantly been decreasing and provides three reasons for supporting the claim. The professor, meanwhile, casts serious doubts on this idea and believes that none of these hypotheses are adequate to answer all the questions relating to this phenomenon.
First, the reading passage asserts that yellow cedar may be invaded by insect parasites, especially the cedar bark beetle, while the lecturer thinks that this hypothesis is problematic. He comments that a fresh cedar is highly resistant to insects than other species because their barks and leaves are fully saturated. Thus, it is unlikely to suffer any damage from beetles. In fact, since beetles only can be found in dead trees, they are not a fundamental problem for healthy cedars.
Second, although the reading claims that brown bears have aggressive feeding habits and also sometimes claw at the cedar to eat tree bark which has a high sugar content, the professor makes the argument that brown bears cannot be the reason for the decline of this species. He says that this phenomenon also has happened in other areas and since there is no brown bear in these places, they cannot be considered as a problem.
Third, the passage posits that the gradual alteration of climate may be the cause for this decline because these changes have affected the root system of the yellow cedar tree and they freeze on cold winter nights which might lead to undermining the health of the whole tree. The lecturer, however, refutes this notion and declares that if freezing damage were responsible for the decline, it might have happened for other species in the cold weather of the high elevations. Therefore, even though the climate change may have made the cedar sensitive, it is not possible to be responsible for killing them.
