some people believe that government officials must carry out the will of the people they serve. Others believe that officials should base their decisions on their own judgment.
The author contends that some people think legislators and government officials should contemplate the society’s will in their decision making processes, while there are some others that consider official judgment should be the only factor in this procedure. In what follows, first, the very main underlying reasons of each group, based on my point of view, will be elaborated, and then it will be proceeded by my own position, afterwards.
The first group, who defends the consideration of people’s opinion, seems to have one chief reason for their statement; which is democracy. I assume they ponder with such way a democratic situation will be governed over the country. Since in democracy all opinions and views will be taken into account, with this way of practice, they think their society will exercise democracy and liberality.
The latter group whose argument is that officials should rely on their discernment and their own discretion perhaps are emphasizing on the role of expert judgments. Most probably in a sound and uncorrupted government, politicians and congress men are seasoned and experienced enough to circumspect before making a final decision. In addition to that, mostly they have some knowledge backgrounds gained in related fields of study. So there is a great possibility that their conclusion after pondering all the outlooks and viewpoints will be the best one. Moreover, most of the time, these men with the help of their colleagues do some field research on the subject of their issues, in advance to proceeding any final decision. In this way, majority’s opinion and their viewpoint will be taken into consideration.
As for my personal point of view, all in all, I agree with the second group as I can even think of another cogent reason for that. In a healthy political system, most of governmental men will be elected by the entire nation through a decent polling mechanism. In this way, divergent thoughts and parties will play a role in the management of a country and its legislation process, for a specific period of time. Although people’s will in making a decision is very important, in this way their wishes and thoughts was brought into account before any exact issue and problem has been raised. Of course, what I am approaching should not be overgeneralized and be interpreted that there should be no absolute voting during their tenure services. In some very special unpredicted issues such as environmental ones, the public opinion is very critical. If a road is planned to be paved in a jungle near my city, for any commercial or industrial purposes, of course my opinion as well as my other neighbors is important and should affect the final decision of our mayor.
