Crime, law, justice and punishment are the subjects of discussion from time immemorial. Giving punishment to a particular crime cannot be generalized. It actually varies and all such crimes cannot be given the unpleasant way of treatment. I am of the opinion that punishment to offenders should not be given to an unpleasant extent.
Many offenders who were actually innocent were given harsh treatment only because of the violent crime which was imposed on them without sufficient investigation. The actual culpable individuals still roam freely without any hindrance. The modern world judicial system should give an ear to the offender’s plea for proving his/her innocence in the court of law. The person should be given a chance to prove his/her part before moving to further proceedings.
Some criminals who have really posed threat to lives of many should be given toughest punishment. There should be enough scrutiny done to separate innocent and the guilty. Here the judiciary plays a key role. It should stress on democratic values with transparency, credibility and accountability. Just by looking at the severity of the crime we cannot predict whether that individual under trial is really guilty.
It would be appropriate to engage such individuals in activities which benefit them in future. They can be rehabilitated, subjected to counseling to make them responsible citizens. As every citizen is an asset to the nation brutal treatment is not the answer for correcting offenders to mend their ways or else it will have boomeranging effects on the society.
