Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? All university students should be required to take at least one class that teaches the culture of a country other than their own. Use specific reasons and example to support your opinion.
Today we emphasize on “global” so much, and people would like to learn foreign languages and cultures. Even though I agree that it is important to know other cultures other than own culture, it does not necessarily be forced to take a class.
Some people support the idea that take classes related to other culture, I believe there are more effective ways to learn about other cultures. We can make a friend from other cultures, or travel other countries. By doing so, we would learn, and understand more about other cultures since culture is not something that you can understand inside of classroom by lecturing. In my case, I went to Russia to learn Russian language even without knowing the alphabet or cultures. However, I have incredible and valuable experience, and learn language very fast.
On top of that, knowledge in other culture is not very practical either. Unless you have a plan to visit other country after the class or have a friend from other culture, you would not have many chances to use knowledge in practice. When I was in high-school, I had a Japanese culture class. Years later I happened to have a homestay student from Japan, however, I could not recall any knowledge from the class despite I had a good grade and so much interested in the class at that time. Moreover, it would wastes time and money, if universities should be required to take a class that students are not interested in.
Many people say that it could contribute to international cooperation, or understand our own cultures better. However, this argument assumed that students are interested in taking classes and fully understand the value of culture, but it is not always the case. If they are not into a subject, it would not be beneficial for them. Thus, I do not agree with the statement that all university students should be required to take a class that teaches the culture of a country other than their own.
