buying a franchise
According to the reading, buying a franchise is the best idea to avoid the risks of starting a new independent business; however the lecturer casts doubts on this idea.
Firstly, the reading states that it would be difficult for an inexperienced business starter to select appropriate suppliers, while franchise owners do not face such a problem as they cooperate with the franchising company’s reliable suppliers. In contrast, the lecturer believes that franchise owners are compelled to use the overpriced products and services of the parent company’s suppliers and that they cannot purchase the cheaper goods available in the market.
Secondly, the reading asserts that franchise owners don’t have to spend a fortune on advertising. They can get benefit of advertising paid for by parent company and sell well-known products. On the other hand, the lecturer claims that advertising by parent company only focuses on the brand and not on the owner’s individual business. That means all other franchise owners of the same brand, which somehow are competitors, can benefit the advertising too. She believes that franchise owners would get greater benefit for less money if they did their own advertising.
Finally, the reading posits that buying a franchise offers a very good security based on the statistics about the failure rates of starting franchises and starting independent businesses. Although the lecturer admits that buying a franchise is less risky than starting a new business, she says that there is a third option which is the most secure: buying an already-existing independent business from previous owners. She claims that this strategy has twice as much chance of success as buying franchises.
