Both of the reading and lecture are about genetic modification. As a matter a fact you can manipulate the organism's genes. For example a tree can produce more profit through fast growth, more fruits and so on. The reading provides three reasons that this occurrence can be advantageous and then supports them. The lecture casts doubt on the claims made in the article. The professor finds all reasons dubious.
First of all, the author of reading declares that these genetic modified trees are rigid and hard in compared with natural trees. Like a tree in Hawaii that its gene has been altered and it is resistant to a virus that harms to its ring spot. This argument is challenged by the lecturer. She points out natural trees have adapted to be resistant in any circumstance like changing weather, attacking any species of insects and so on. The professor elaborates on this by mentioning that changed trees have been planned just for specific condition and in other cases of natural disasters, they can wipe up.
Second, the reading contends that modified trees can provides some advantages in economic fields because they will be able to grow faster and produce more fruits. This point is rebutted by the lecturer. She claims that this approach is too costly. On the one hand, companies have to charge a great number of farmers; on the other hand, for collecting seeds or planting new modified trees by law, people have to pay much money to companies.
Finally, the article proposes that this method will be effect for protecting environment. Since the demand for wood has been increased by people in the world; hence, we can avoid cutting down natural trees; conversely, the professor refutes this suggestion. The lecturer believes that altered trees grow aggressively; consequently, they can create limitation for natural trees because they will compete for soil, water even sun light with non-modified trees; subsequently it can create negative effects.
