The reading and the lecture are about the Zebra mussels- a freshwater selfish creature- which its origin belongs to Eastern Europe. These mussels have been outspreading to the North America. The reading provides three reasons that this species has some serious disadvantages for fish population in The North America. The lecture casts doubt on the claims made in the article. As a matter a fact the professor finds all arguments unconvincing.
First of all, the author of reading declares that the zebra mussels can attach themselves to ships which comes from Eastern Europe and since these ships passes from a kind of water is called ballast water; hence, they can survive and arrive to other places including Europe and America. This problem has been created from nineteenth century and it cannot be solved. This point is challenged by the lecturer. The professor contends that it was impossible to be solved such a harmful trouble in the past; however, nowadays there is a strong knowledge base. The researchers have concluded that the zebra mussels cannot tolerate salt water; consequently, if the ships change their routs to the ocean waters, this issue will remove.
Secondly, the article claims that this species does not have intense predator, besides they are able to resist and reproduce in any condition; subsequently, their population will never stop. This argument is rebutted by the professor. He states that in the past, there were some birds that confronted lack of food, and then they preferred to modify their diet and eat the zebra mussels. He elaborates on this by mentioning that at first, this creature will not have predator but after while the circumstance can alter and other animals feed on the zebra mussels.
Finally, the reading passage proposes that since these sailfishes eats planktons; therefore, other fish populations can suffer from lack of food and their population will decrease. On the other hand the lecturer expresses that despite negative aspects, the zebra mussels can have positive effects on other types of fish population. For instance, this species can produce nutrition that for consuming of bottom fishes; as a result, their population will increase.
