Both of the reading and lecture are about the reduction of populations of the yellow cedar that is predominance in northwestern North America. The reading provides three reasons for this decline and then supports them. The lecture casts doubt on the claims made in the article. The professor finds all theories inappropriate.
First of all, the author of reading declares that insects like a beetle that is known as the cedar bark beetle may have affected in this occurrence. Since these types of beetles like to eat the cedar's wood; consequently, they can harm the cedar trees. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He points out that the healthy trees usually are resistance in front of the insects because their wood or bark is able to produce some toxic substances which can kill insects; hence, the insects eat trees which have died.
Second, the reading passage contends that brown bears are inclined to claw cedar’s barks because this type of tree has sugar into its bark and it goes without saying that bears love sweet substance; subsequently, this can create negative impression on cedar's power for surviving. This argument is rebutted by the professor. He claims that we have this decline in all coasts of North America including islands too; as a result, there is no bear in the island. In short they are not responsible for this disappointing happening.
Finally, the article suggests that climate change may have caused cedar trees to commence their growth in the late winter instead of in the early spring, so it can have harmful effect on their roots; conversely, the professor refutes this suggestion. He believes that a great number of trees have declined in low elevations that have warm climate and one should not forget that freezing damages can be observed in high elevations.
